Former England and Leicester City striker Gary Lineker has made history by becoming the first person to be awarded the Freedom of the City of Leicester.

The accolade is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon an individual by a city, and is given to those who have made an extraordinary contribution to the life and culture of the area. Lineker, who was born and raised in Leicester, was presented with the award at a special ceremony held at Leicester City Hall.

During his speech Lineker paid tribute to the city and its inhabitants, saying: “Leicester has been my home for my entire life and I am proud to accept this honour and recognition.”

The 57-year-old is the most successful footballer in Leicester City’s history, having scored 95 goals in 194 appearances for the club between 1978 and 1985. He also enjoyed a successful international career, winning 80 caps for England and scoring 48 goals, which remains a record for an English player.

Lineker is also well-known for his presenting work, having hosted the BBC’s iconic Match of the Day since 1999. His career in football broadcasting has seen him become one of the most recognisable faces in British television.
